Beginnings

Read Now

The early rain on sage, the snowmelt beneath the spruces, the burgeoning buds and growing greenery all titillate my senses, making me aware of spring and new beginnings.  At this moment I am on the verge of publishing my most recent volume of poetry, a poetry chapbook entitled Walking Natural Pathways thanks to the efforts and editors of Unsolicited Press.  This richly theme-oriented text begins with fresh, modern poetry and then slowly moves backwards in time through more traditional styles of poetry, finally ending with lyrical poems and songs.  Many of the lyrical songs originated during my other life as a songwriter, musician, and backcountry guide and were professionally recorded years ago.  Audio recordings of most of these songs will be released on YouTube as the book is released.  (Two examples are posted as links below).  I will also post more information about the chapbook, its availability, and any potential book readings I might have the opportunity be a part of.

Within thirteen months of the chapbook release, my book-length work currently entitled  Walking Natural Pathways will also be released, again published by Unsolicited Press.  As this wonderful array of essays, memoirs, stories, philosophy, and teaching anecdotes nears publication, I will release updates, representative writing samples, and more.  Perhaps the best way to describe this work is to say that due to needing a day job, I discovered that you can indeed take the teacher out of the wilderness, but you simply cannot take the wilderness out of the teacher!

This simple website will remain active and perhaps grow slowly.  I hope that the books will grow more quickly, watered liberally by readership.

Mark Doherty

As always, Mark, your words flow as naturally and easily as the wild and open landscape that inspires you.
